About Game.Dev

Game.Dev is a community of like-minded game developers in South Africa, it’s a brand, a banner and a rallying cry. It exists to build a game development industry in our country and make real the dreams of those that would love nothing more than to make games.

Started by a rogue forum post in 2004, Game.Dev quickly gained momentum on the back of its game development competitions every two months and helpful approach to people wanting to get involved. The community organises numerous events all over the country throughout the year, culminating in South Africa’s only game development conference as part of the annual Really AWESOME Gaming Event (rAge) expo in Johannesburg.

Lowering the barriers to game development and encouraging the growth of member portfolios by advocating tools like Game Maker and drilling home the message of “make games, not engines”, Game.Dev seeks to grow skills, nurture our embryonic industry and act as a promotional vehicle for local developers.

Game.Dev is an organic, self-organising collection of passionate people that creates and runs with initiatives like Dev.Mag, talks at schools and universities, helps as many people as possible and just generally believes that pretty much everyone should be making games.

Translation:
We make games. It’s fun, come join us!
